Study Into Action

Between 2001 and 2006, QAAD supported Helena Chambers in undertaking a study into the attitudes and behaviour of Friends today as regards gambling and substances. Five Preparative Meetings and Young Friends General Meeting kindly co-operated. The study was supervised by Ben Pink Dandelion of Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre and undertaken as a Ph.D.

The study was used as the basis of a book called ‘To Use or not to Use?’ which explores how Friends are relating to the subject – and the realities – of alcohol, other drugs and gambling in our modern society. The book outlines the ways in which the Quaker community has a distinctive approach to offer.
