Alcohol: a spiritual thirst?

March 2010: Download Latest QAADRANT

In this edition, two Friends share their perspectives on the relationships between spiritual life and the use of alcohol and other substances. Laurie Andrews ranges widely in a discussion of intoxication and sobriety, moving from a Christian hymn via Hindu traditions to the correspondence between Jung and Bill W – and arrives at the silent worship of the Quaker meeting.

Judy Clinton shares her experiences of ‘Writing the Spirit’ in a rehabilitation unit, from her own initial nervousness to a conviction that it can be of deep help to those recovering from an addiction.  If you would like to hear more, Judy will be making a contribution to QAAD’s Woodbrooke conference in July.

There is also a lively account of the recent QAADNET meeting by David Barry.  He gives an appreciative report of the two speakers: the first was Robin Touquet, Professor of Emergency Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington, who described how people with alcohol-related injuries are helped, and how important it is that this work continues.  The second speaker was Lianna Pim, who discussed ‘Too Much Too Young’, the film she made for QAAD.
